Who gets the pets in a divorce? 

 Generally speaking, most states do not have “pet custody” laws that apply when a couple is divorcing. Some states, such as Alaska, Illinois, and California, are beginning to consider what’s in the pet’s “best interests” when determining which spouse gets to keep the pet. But for now, the majority of states decide pet ownership by using simpler property laws.
