A QDRO is a qualified domestic relations order, which allows you to split up a retirement plan (401k) or a pension plan after a divorce.
Why might I need one?
A person can’t legally assign his/her portion or stake in the plan to someone else without this kind of order. So if you’re entitled to part of your spouse’s retirement account, you’ll need to make sure you have this kind of order completed when your case is finalized. If not, you could be left out in the cold.
